Endure it! Athlete of the Month
As you set up your computrainer and size up the athletes around you; you don't have to look far to find inspiration. We are surrounded by determined overachievers utilizing our program to help them reach a wide spectrum of goals, from Ironman to a healthier lifestyle.
This month's featured Endure It athlete is Jean Quinn. The 56 year old lawyer and mother of 3 has been part of the Endure It family for 3 years. Although she enjoyed trying new things, Quinn never stuck with any organized sport as a child. "I was first introduced to biking in high school when the 10 speed came out. Mine had an orange seat, and I still have it," Jean remarked. Growing up the youngest of six on the south side of Chicago, Jean went on to marry and graduate from John Marshall Law School.
She discovered triathlon a few years back and landed at Endure It as part of her desire to improve. She remarked, "The results are fantastic and quick. I saw improvement by the second threshold test I took. I can now execute a full pedal stroke. I love swimming, but I don't see the measured improvement like I do in the bike classes. I have learned so much about training from the Endure it coaches, as well as from listening to other athletes in the classes. More than anything, I enjoy the people at Endure It. Everyone is accepting. I can't believe I am in the same classes as such outstanding athletes. I have established great relationships."
About a year ago while on a girl's trip in Colorado, she made a pact with a group of friends to get healthier. They all joined Weight Watchers. Jean found that Weight Watchers alone didn't melt away the pounds. When she added computrainer classes to her healthy diet, she uncovered the new Jean. She has transformed her body and continues to get stronger and more fit.
Another driving force behind Jeans dedication is her friend Sue. "My good friend Sue was diagnosed with MS when she was in her late thirties. She loved to garden and do all the mom things; like volunteer at school and play tennis. She had planned on going back to school when her kids reached high school. Her diagnosis changed her life. She gets around on a scooter and has a restrictive diet. I often think of her when I exercise. I feel so badly that she can't walk, let alone do what I do."
Although she has accomplished much, Quinn plans on raising the bar with her athletic goals. Within the next few years she plans on taking a long bike trip and completing a half Iron distance triathlon. We are thrilled to be part of your success Jean. Thanks for the inspiration. It has a wonderful trickle down affect.

REMINDER: INFORMATIONAL MEETING FOR "JOY OF RUNNING CLUB" THIS SUNDAY DECEMBER 5TH AT 6PM - WILLOWBROOK
Endure It! Introduces "THE JOY OF RUNNING CLUB" by Coach Sara Fix
Endure It! is committed to finding the runner in all of us. We have come up with a fun and comprehensive program that should get any runner in tip top shape. The group workouts are designed to be motivational for the group, but will keep an emphasis on each runners personal goals. Do not miss the opportunity to put running into your life. The club will be limited to 20 runners. It begins the week of January 10th and will run through April 10th.
It is a 13 week program located at Endure It! Sports in Willowbrook (Hwy 83 and 75th St.). The running sessions are offered 3 times a week and will also include informational talks lead by experts in their fields (elite runners, professional triathletes, doctors) every third week at 7 p.m. This time will be used to cover other related topics of running. The actual training runs will meet at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, 9 a.m. on Wednesday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Please allow 75 minutes in your schedule to attend these sessions. During these sessions we will be doing building blocks of progression focusing first on strength, endurance and then speed.
ABOUT THE COACH: SARA FIX
First and foremost I want to inspire. I was inspired in 1997 when in awe I watched my husband complete his third Hawaii Ironman. I watched him train, qualify and then complete the most competitive and difficult triathlon in the world. It changed my life and attitude about fitness. As a result of being inspired I have completed close to 100 different types of races over the past 11 years. I am most proud of completing 13 ironman races. Among those I qualified for and raced in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii placing 16th in my age group. I have earned the title of Age Group All American for the past four years. Though I love triathlon, running seems to come the easiest for me and where I excel. I have qualified three times for the Boston Marathon with my marathon split in an Ironman Race (The marathon after a 112 mile bike ride and 2.4 mile swim). So, coaching and hoping to inspire the runner in all of us seems a natural fit.
This is a hobby I started in my thirties. I began competing around the time I was married, then having and raising children and most recently starting our business Endure It! sports and Endure It! Life. So, I understand how difficult it is to balance it all. I have found the time to fit it in and so can you. I want to share this joy with all of you. Whether you are male, female, old, young, busy, bored whatever your status if you have the desire to run lets start this journey together. I will do whatever I can to ensure that this is terrific for each one in the group. I look forward to the opportunity to run with all of you. If I can answer any questions: email firstname.lastname@example.org or 312-401-4392 (cell).
THE EDUCATIONAL DISCUSSIONS WHICH WILL MAKE RUNNING MORE JOYFUL:
Each of these talks will be lead by the EXPERTS in the field.
JANUARY 12 - INDIVIDUAL RUNNING SHOE ASSESSMENT:
Naperville Running Company, the running shoe experts will join us at Endure It! to address all our shoe issues. Midge Good, Boston marathoner, will speak on the importance of proper running footwear. Then each runner will show the experts their shoes and run stride. The team will recommend the perfect shoe for each individual. Each runner will receive a10% discount on their shoe purchase.
Either prior to the beginning of our run program or in the first few weeks we suggest a fitness performance test. This will give both the runner and the coach guidelines for each individuals run training. It is a test which gives us the athletes threshold level and targeted heart rate zones. This is not mandatory. However, Endure It! Sports in Naperville will take appointments and do the testing for a discounted amount. The test is usually $150.00, however your price will be $75.00. A great deal. Remember this is NOT MANDATORY. Helpful, but not mandatory.
JANUARY 26 - HEART RATE TRAINING:
David Fix, OWNER and founder of Endure It! sports will expand training, coaching, and competing experiences as well as speak about heartrate training and the approach to bettering your fitness through heartrate training.
FEBRUARY 16 - INDIVIDUAL BIOMECHANICS ASSESSMENT:
Gina Pongetti owner of Accelerated Rehabilitation will speak about injury and how to avoid them. Gina comes to us with years of experience in treating accomplished ironman athletes, triathletes and marathoners in ART and Physical Therapy. She will assess all of the different running strides and each individuals natural biomechanics. Then she will advise each athlete on stretches and strength training they can do to avoid injury if they are inefficent in their natural gait.
MARCH 1 -TIPS FOR DRESSING IN COLD WEATHER:
A CRAFT sportswear representative will join us and advise the athletes on how to dress minimally, but staying warm in the inclement weather. Craft is a wonderful clothing line for athletes who train outdoors year round. There is a very easy way to stay warm in below zero temperatures by adding just a few pieces to your wardrobe. Craft will keep us warm and cozy for the rest of the winter.
MARCH 23 - NUTRITION:
As it begins to warm up, we may want to put a race on our schedule. No matter how much you train, if you do not use the proper nutrition during both your training sessions and on race day it is sure to not be as positive of an experience. So, Dan Dziubski will speak to us about good nutrition and the products available to us. Dan is an All-American triathlete, world class runner and has earned degrees in both General Health and Sports Nutrition. So, as an expert in his field he believes in healthy living, puts it to use in his everyday life and in his 15 years of competition. He will help us understand what is healthy before, during and after workouts. He will also introduce the athletes to the various nutritional aides one can use to sustain energy. For example, gu, power bars, cliff shots, EFS drinks... sound familiar. After this talk there wiill be a discount of 20% offered to all athletes on nutritional products that night. I will also supply samples of the different products.
APRIL 6 - WRITING A PERSONAL TRAINING SCHEDULE:
This will be our final speaker. Jen Garrison Pro Triathlete and Endure It! Coach will join us for the last evening. She was ROOKIIE PRO OF THE YEAR, 2010. She is also The USAT Top Triathlete RUNNER UP. She will join us on some of our track workouts. Her strength is speed. So, she will use these sessions to teach us the tricks of the trade. However, she will talk to us about how to write and organize a training schedule. You will have learned all the workouts you need in order to get in shape. To race, there is a formula. She will teach us step by step how to organize our training week in order to race. Whether it be a 5k, 10k, half marathon or marathon. She has the formula and will instruct the group on the proper preparation.
She is also available for personal coaching. If you would like a personal running coach she is a terrific resource.
THROUGHOUT the training we will have the joy of working with coach and instructor Joanne Dellatorre. She will lead us in some stretching and athletic yoga after some of our more strenuous training sessions - THE JOY OF STRETCHING.
The cost of the entire program is $200(lectures and workouts). Please register and pay at either one of the Endure It! sports locations (Naperville/Willowbrook). If you are only interested in the lectures, you are welcome to attend those. The fee will be $25.00 per talk. You can sign up for those at Endure It! as well.
I hope this has answered all your questions. We will offer a Q and A December 5th from 6 - 8 pm at Endure It! Sports Willowbrook. In the meantime, Coach Sara can be reached at 312-401-4392. She looks forward to working with the runner in all of you.
